St. Luke's Children's Hospital School

At St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital School, we support the intellectual development of our patients as part of their comprehensive care—working with them so they can keep pace with their classmates, and ultimately return to their community schools and teachers. Services are free and available to inpatient and outpatient school-aged children seen at St. Luke’s Children’s.

Partner Programs

Our school partners with local organizations and individuals to bring additional educational/cultural services into our classrooms. Current partners include:

  • Art classes provided by a local artists
  • Music/rhythm provided by Boise Rock School
  • Shakespeare and theater provided by Idaho Shakespeare Festival

School Re-Integration

When children are ready to return to school, whether part-time or full-time, our teachers can meet with staff at the child’s community school to help plan for their educational, physical, and emotional needs. We currently offer:

  • Assistance in developing 504 Accommodation Plans and Individualized Education Plans
  • Provide education on special education processes to parents/family members
  • Review neuropsychological, physical, occupational and speech therapy evaluations in order to develop most appropriate accommodations.
  • Outline the current social/emotional status of the child in line with the medical report
  • Provide peer presentation in community schools to explain childhood illness/injuries and treatments
  • Provide in-service education to peer professionals on the impact a chronic/serious illness or injury has on educational success

Children’s Hospital School Program Staff

Our staff is led by Colin Carr, MSEd and Sunday Twilegar. Both are Idaho state-certified K-12 special education and K-8 elementary education teachers. They oversee a group of support personnel who assist with bedside and classroom instruction. Staff are members of the national organization, the Association for the Education of Children with Medical Needs (AECMN).
